My Professional Organizations

College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)

The CNO is the governing body for all Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners and Registered Practical Nurses in the province of Ontario. The CNO establishes entry to practice guidelines which I use as a practice leader when interviewing newly graduated nurses to ensure that they are coming with the correct knowledge. They also enforce the nurses standards of conduct and act as a disciplinary body should the need arise.

Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)

The RNAO is the professional association representing nurses in Ontario. This organization advocates for healthy public policy as well as nursing safety.  The RNAO is an organization which supports and empowers nurses with many interest groups and publications.  They also provide liability insurance to their members as an option when joining.

Emergency Nurses Association of Ontario (ENAO)

The ENAO is an association for emergency room nurses and was formed in 1972.  In my role I frequently find myself referring to their standards of emergency nursing.  This organization also frequently develops new best practice initiatives for the emergency department. As a corporate member I have access to various journals and articles specific to my area of practice.  This allows me to support practice change with strong evidence.

Professional Practice Network of Ontario (PPNO)

The PPNO is for healthcare organizations, various professional groups as well as regulatory colleges. In my practice this organization assists myself and my colleagues to network with other practice leads in the province to share information and ensure that we are remaining current with practice.  It also allows for sharing of ideas in other similar hospital settings.  For myself talking with other clinicians at rural hospitals with similar staffing ratios has been a great help.
